Beyond the Student Years: How Bangladesh Welfare Association Portsmouth Supports the Whole Community

Not every challenge you'll face in Portsmouth is a "student" problem. Maybe your parents are visiting and need guidance navigating the NHS. Maybe you're helping an older relative with a British passport renewal. Maybe you just want to be around people who've built a life here over decades, not just people going through the same four years you are. For all of that, there's an organisation that's been doing exactly this work in Portsmouth for over 60 years: Bangladesh Welfare Association Portsmouth (BWA).
Who they are
BWA was founded in 1963 and formally registered as a charity in 1999 (charity number 1074997). Their motto sums up the philosophy simply: "A problem is reduced when we share the burden." Their stated mission is to help the Bangladeshi community in Portsmouth "become self-sufficient and successfully integrate into UK society whilst maintaining the integrity of their cultural, religious and linguistic identity" — support without asking anyone to choose between the two.
What they actually help with
BWA's support goes well beyond events and celebration — their services page and help section list real, practical help:
Documents and immigration: assistance with British passport applications and renewals, No Visa Required (NVR)/tourist visa applications for non-Bangladeshi passport holders travelling to Bangladesh, and support with citizenship/naturalisation applications.
Attestation and character references: for anyone known to one or more committee members — useful for various official applications.
Housing and bills: guidance on social housing, private tenancy issues, council tax, and help reviewing your home energy tariff to find potential savings.
Cost-of-living support: signposting for Universal Credit, Carer's Allowance, Council Tax Reduction, and benefits for those 60+, disabled individuals, or with childcare needs.
Health and wellbeing: separate men's and women's health and fitness groups, a dedicated men's mental health programme (including weekly walks in Southsea and talking therapy signposting), and general mental health/wellbeing referrals through partner charities.
Community Connectors: a short, structured programme (around six to eight sessions) specifically for adults experiencing loneliness or isolation, helping build confidence to engage with the local community.
Urgent care guidance: practical information on when to use an urgent treatment centre versus A&E, including local options like St Mary's Campus Portsmouth.
Community and culture, not just problem-solving
BWA is equally active in celebrating and preserving Bangladeshi culture in Portsmouth — Bangla Mela, Independence Day and Victory Day celebrations, an Elders Picnic, and periodic Consular Surgery days for consular services closer to home. It's a genuine gathering point across generations, not just a support office.
Becoming a member
Membership costs £10 for the 2026-2028 term. As a member you're kept informed of the charity's work, fundraising, and community activities by post, phone, or email, and you're part of the wider network BWA is building across Portsmouth's Bangladeshi community.

Two organisations, one community
SWAP and BWA aren't competing for the same role — we're focused on students and young professionals navigating university life; BWA has spent six decades supporting the Bangladeshi community here across every generation, from newly arrived families to elders who've called Portsmouth home for years. If something you're facing feels bigger than what SWAP can help with, or your family here needs support beyond student life, BWA is very much worth reaching out to.
